The Basics of a Balanced Diet

Hello fellow food enthusiasts, let us dive into the world of calories with me.First off, what is a calorie? A calories is basically a measurement unit used to quantify the amount of energy that food provides when it is consumed and processed by our bodies.

Now lets picture an Olympics competition. We have three contenders: fat, carbs and proteins. Who wins this calories competition?

Fats have the most calories per gram, with a whooping 9.45 calories per gram. Proteins and Carbohydrates come last with about 4.1 calories per gram each.

Every gram of fat packs in more than double the calories than proteins or carbohydrates. This means that this tantalizing fats can be a real challenge to our waistline if we are not careful.

Some factors that affect the actual energy that we get from food:

  • Type of food.
  • The quantity of food.
  • Our individual metabolism.

Lets not forget that our bodies also use up energy to digest and absorb these foods that we gobble up.

Now, knowing the caloric value of food can be a total game changer, when aiming to keep our caloric intake in check. If you wanna shed a few Kgs/Pounds, consider teaming up with foods that are low in fat and carbs but have more proteins. This will provide your body with the fuel it needs and help you in your fitness goals.
